The 34th Annual Milford
Oyster Festival's Canoe and Kayak Race will be held on Saturday August
16th at the Milford Boat Launch behind the Milford Public Library.
Registration fee is $25 for all boats registered by August
11th and $35 for those registering the day of the race. The
first 50 entries will receive an official Annual Milford Oyster
Festival Canoe & Kayak Race t-shirt. On the day of the race,
registration will be from 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. with the races
beginning promptly at 10 a.m.
In the kayak race, the
course is out to a buoy beyond Charles Island and back (5 miles). For
kayak racers, there are separate men’s and women’s
classes. The canoe race will have two classes, the Racing
Class and the Novice Class but no separate classes for men or women. We
trust that folks that enter the Novice Class race will truly be
novices! The Racing Class will turn on a buoy mid-way to
Charles Island (4 miles), while the Novice Class will turn on a buoy in
front of the Milford Yacht Club (1 mile). Canoes in the
Racing Class can have 2, 3 or 4 participants; in the Novice Class
canoes can have 2 or 3 participants.
Trophies will be awarded
for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place. Mayor James Richetelli will
officiate at the race and award the Mayor's Cup trophy to the fastest
canoe and the fastest kayak in each class.
In the spirit of having
fun, some canoe
racers may wish to decorate their boats and costume
themselves. An
award will be given to the boat and crew judged “Best in
Show”.
All participants are
required to wear
personal flotation devices and there should be at least one whistle on
board. No person under 10 years old is permitted in boats and
a
parent's signature is required for all persons under 18 years of age.
Competition cruisers and marathon pro boats are not allowed.
